A collective demand against Take-Two Interactive has been presented for the use of booty boxes in NBA 2K22 and other iterations in the series. According to Bloomberg reports, the lawsuit was presented by a minor and the guardian of it, and initially presented itself in the Circuit Court of Winnebago County. Subsequently, the demand was transferred to the Northern District court of Illinois last month. The demand seeks $ 5 million in damages from the publisher and seeks to link the booty boxes and microotransractions with gambling.
“The delegated, deceptive and illegal practices of the defendant, including illegal playing practices, deceive, cheat and harm consumers,” said plaintiffs in the presentation.
The booty boxes and microotransractions have been an important source of controversy for the game industry. Over the years, many have accused them of being predators. As a result, there are many players who actively avoid titles that are based largely in practice, including streamers such as Asmongold. Despite resistance, publishers have greatly benefited from practice, earning billions every year. The lawsuit alleges that the booty boxes “psychologically distance” players of real money spent; In other words, they are arguing that minors who do not see immediately the financial impact of these purchases continue to spend money on them without realizing the consequences.
It will be interesting to see how demand is developed and if it leads to significant changes for future NBA 2K games or for the videogame industry in general. As Bloomberg points out, this is not the first case that tries to cause changes related to booty boxes; While attempts to prohibit them in the US. UU. So far they have been unsuccessful, it is difficult to say if this could have a greater success. For now, we will only have to wait and see.
